Busted..

Months into our marriage(14yrs ago) there where a few things that dh had and for whatever reason he really liked having them, and I just didn't like them at all.

First there was this hanging lamp which was yellowish from age and being in a smokers home it had a bronze looking chain that  seemed so out of place and the electric cord needed replacing because every time I would go to turn it off it would shock me..really it was a fire hazard. And entertainment for my dh to watch me jump every time I'd turn it off.

He also had a collection of aviation magazines just piled up in a basket..honestly why hold on to so many?

Once you read it your done.

So you may as well share them or toss them, am I right people?

One day while he was out..I was organizing and for all good intentions I decided to put the lamp away as well as those aviator magazines just to see if he would notice. (Out of site out of mind.)

And he never did.

So a few months later they got tossed in the apartment dumpster while he was away of coarse just in case he was still clingy.

The story should end here...

but it doesn't.

Later in the month we go over to my parents house for dinner..we are sitting in their living room visiting and I noticed in the corner of the room a lamp that looked allot like the one I just tossed..at the same minute my dh noticed it also and says " I had a lamp just like that one..those are cool."

My (late) thrifty and creative step mom was quite pleased with herself when she piped in " O' would you believe someone tossed it in the apartment dumpster at my mom's all it needed was some bleach and a new cord and it's as good as new and I love it!

Dh "great find" silence..eyes on me.

Me (whispering)" ha huh..yeah..busted but hey she loves it..I didn't."

Yeah..I failed to realize that my dumpster diving step mom would frequent our place because her mother lived in the same complex so while she was taking out the trash she would find the lamp and the magazines that she gave to her nephew who later told my dh "man thanks for those magazines they're great, dude!"

Again..busted.

Since then when I purge I make sure nothing will come back to hunt me. He's still ask about those golf clubs he never used..ever. Or the bread machine (that over cooked every loaf!) which I would also like to replace.

This week there's a lot of cleaning out going on in efforts to help our church school's garage sale.

Hey it's for a good cause! ;)

That is the exact reason that we STILL have 14 year old Turkey Hunter and Golf Digest magazines. They are no longer "on display" but still accessible if needed. Luckily there are not too many things dh or I hold onto so it usually isn't a problem. Good luck on your purging!

that is hilarious! My husband and I are newly-married and I can feel your pain about the random things husbands hold on to, that they act like they don't care about. sheesh, just throw it away then... but alas, it comes back? gotta love it

cheers!

LOL!!! My MIL shops like a mad woman at the thrift store. Sometimes she buys things for my kids that I take back....I'm afraid one day she is going to buy the same thing back!

Yep! Over here too (raising hand). My husband keeps EVERYTHING. We have four broken vaccuum cleaners and a corner in the storage building dedicated to things he brought home from his mother's house that we have never used (and never will).

Early in our marriage it was established that I was to NEVER throw away any of his things. If I want to toss out something of mine I have to hide it in the trash can or her will scoop it out and keep it.

I am so glad it's never come back to haunt me. That is a funny story! Lisa~

I saw my mom get busted for this! So, I knew as a newlywed not to pitch anything!

Oh my word, that is FUNNY!

I'm with you. I have a 6 month policy. If it doesn't get used in 6 months, it's gone. Rob needs therapy.
